Lavasteen Seamless Floor in a bathroom — seamless and waterproof
Material · Lavasteen Seamless Floor

Lavasteen Seamless Floor
epoxy, waterproof, slip-resistant.

A trowelable floor with ground lava stone in an epoxy base — a resin-bound stone floor, also known as a stone carpet. Intrinsically waterproof — even if the top layer is damaged. Slip-resistant due to the natural granular structure. 20 standard colours, plus NCS and RAL on request.

01 — What it is

Epoxy + ground lava stone

Lavasteen Seamless Floor is a trowel-applied finish: volcanic lava stone ground to powder, mixed with epoxy and colour pigments. Trowelled onto the substrate — total thickness 1 to 2 millimetres.

Suitable for new and existing floors, provided they are sufficiently level and stable. Finished with one coat of UV-resistant PU topcoat for ease of maintenance.

02 — Waterproof to the core

Safe in any wet room

The epoxy components form a single dense, closed mass together with the lava stone granules. A scratch or impact does not mean water can penetrate — the material is inherently waterproof, even without a PU topcoat over it.

That is why we recommend Lavasteen for bathroom floors, shower floors and toilet floors. This does not apply to microcement — that is mineral-based and depends on the PU topcoat for waterproofing.

Natural granular structure

Lavasteen has an open structure due to the granule fraction. This provides inherently slip-resistant properties — ideal for those walking barefoot in the bathroom or shower.

With one coat of PU topcoat, the installer subtly seals the structure: slightly smoother for ease of maintenance, but the anti-slip function remains. Daily rinsing, weekly mopping with pH-neutral cleaner.

Applications

In which room?

Lavasteen is by far the best material for wet floors (bathroom, shower, toilet). Also an excellent choice in kitchens and living rooms due to its thickness and durability — just slightly more robust than microcement.

Colour

20 standard colours plus NCS and RAL on request

Lavasteen is available in 20 standard colours with names that reference nature — Sea Shell, Hill Flower, Morning Dew, Hazel, Wool. For exact colour matching, NCS and RAL are available on request, with additional time for mixing and testing.

The granular structure of Lavasteen creates a subtle texture that takes on its own character in every lighting situation. Not a flat colour — something that breathes.

Frequently asked

What customers ask us beforehand

Is Lavasteen waterproof?
Yes, intrinsically. The epoxy components form a single dense mass with the lava stone granules that resists water. Even if the top layer is damaged, the material remains waterproof — no mineral underneath that can absorb moisture. That is why it is the material for bathroom floors.
How durable is a Lavasteen floor?
Thanks to the epoxy base with lava-stone aggregate, Lavasteen is considerably more robust than microcement. Under normal use, a Lavasteen floor lasts 15+ years. Local repairs are possible; the granular structure makes repair transitions virtually invisible.
Does Lavasteen work with underfloor heating?
Yes, excellently. The epoxy matrix and lava granules conduct heat efficiently — slightly faster than microcement. For living rooms and bathrooms with underfloor heating, that's a direct advantage.
How many colours are available?
20 standard colours with natural names such as Sea Shell, Hill Flower, Morning Dew, Hazel, Wool. NCS and RAL are available on request — we then need extra time for mixing and testing, as Lavasteen does not come from a tube.
Is Lavasteen slip-resistant?
Yes, inherently. The natural granular structure provides grip — ideal for bathroom and shower floors where wet feet tread. The single PU topcoat subtly seals the structure without losing the anti-slip property.
Can Lavasteen also be applied to walls?
Yes. Lavasteen on walls requires one layer of filling PU (instead of multiple layers as on floors). For a bathroom in one material from floor to ceiling, that's an elegant solution. Mention it in your enquiry and we'll take it into account in our advice.

The practical rule: microcement for walls, Lavasteen Seamless Floor for floors — especially in bathrooms and showers. Both work perfectly alongside each other in the same space (same colour family) for a seamless result from floor to ceiling.

Applications

Where does Lavasteen Seamless Floor work best?

Bathroom floor

The core application. Epoxy is intrinsically waterproof — even if the PU topcoat is damaged by a dropped object (perfume bottle, hairdryer). A microcement floor would suffer consequential damage: moisture penetrates the mineral beneath. Not with Lavasteen. See also Lavasteen in the bathroom for the complete application page.

Walk-in shower and shower floor

The combination of waterproof + anti-slip makes Lavasteen ideal for shower floors. The natural granular structure (finely ground volcanic lava stone) keeps the surface safe when wet. No joints where limescale or mould can accumulate — one continuous finish, easy to clean with pH-neutral cleaner.

Toilet floor

In a cloakroom there is less water than in a bathroom, but splashes do occur around the WC. Lavasteen handles this effortlessly, especially in smaller spaces where use is intensive per m². The 1-2 mm thickness rarely requires adjustment to thresholds or door swing.

Living room and open-plan kitchens

Not just for wet rooms — Lavasteen works perfectly on large living room floors if you want an industrial, mineral aesthetic without joints. Combines beautifully with timber frames, natural stone elements or a fireplace. For living rooms we often use warmer tones such as Linnen, Mushroom or Sea Shell.

Commercial: showroom, office, retail

The combination of wear-resistant + waterproof + design appearance makes Lavasteen suitable for commercial spaces. Showrooms and shops choose it for the premium look. Restaurants or cafés for the hygiene (no joints = easy to clean).

Underfloor heating — perfect combination

Lavasteen Seamless Floor conducts heat well thanks to its relatively thin build-up (1-2 mm). In new-build with low-temperature underfloor heating it combines excellently — rapid warm-up, high efficiency. With existing concrete floors with underfloor heating, check moisture content (max 2%) before application.

Frequently asked — additional questions

More questions about Lavasteen Seamless Floor

What does a Lavasteen Seamless Floor cost per m²?

For DIY kits we start at approximately €235 per 5 m² bucket (~€47 per m²). For professional installation by our contractors it typically ranges between €90 and €150 per m², depending on substrate, colour and surface area. A complete bathroom floor of 6 m² therefore costs between €540 (DIY material) and €900 (professionally installed).

How long does it take to install a Lavasteen Seamless Floor?

A typical bathroom floor (5–10 m²) is installed in 2 working days, including drying time between layers. After installation, a further 7 days of full curing for maximum durability — walking is possible after 24 hours, intensive use after one week.

Does Lavasteen work on an existing tiled floor?

Yes. Existing tiles do not need to be removed. We degrease them, fill the joints, level any unevenness and apply Lavasteen directly on top. No demolition = no noise, no skip, no weeks without a bathroom. Our 1–2 mm thickness rarely requires adjustment to thresholds or door swing — we assess this beforehand during the site survey.

Is a Lavasteen Seamless Floor suitable for allergy-prone families?

Yes — no joints where dust and house dust mites can accumulate. Easy to keep clean daily with a damp cloth or vacuum cleaner. No carpet off-gassing. For asthmatic or allergic families often a better choice than carpet or laminate-with-seams.

What if I get a scratch or damage?

Minor scratches on the PU topcoat: we touch those up by reapplying locally — virtually invisible thanks to the matte natural finish. Deeper damage into the Lavasteen layer: less straightforward but still repairable via local reapplication. The epoxy base is intrinsically waterproof, so one small scratch does not require immediate repair — no risk of consequential damage as with a microcement floor.

Can I request colour samples before I decide?

Yes. We send up to 3 physical colour samples so you can assess them in your own lighting conditions — Lavasteen colours look different in daylight than under LED spotlights, and only on-site will you truly see how it works out. Request colour samples.

Which Lavasteen colour is most popular?

At present customers most frequently ask for Linnen (warm soft-grey, suits any space), Sea Shell (light creamy-white shade) and Mushroom (warmer beige with grey tones). Popular for The Hague seaside neighbourhoods: Sea Shell and Sea Kale — reassuringly neutral tones. For more industrial style: Graphite, Shiitake or Reindeer Moss.
